How to approach a request

The Diamonds & Cream Production’ difference

I was Djing after another DJ at a club. I arrived half hour before and was hanging out in the DJ Booth. A lady came up and requested a Latino song that both of us had never heard of.

At this point there’s literally no one in the club or dance floor, just this lady and her boyfriend.

DJ is standing back in the booth with arms crossed over and completely dismissed her and says ‘ No, don’t have it’.

Lady: But he didn’t even look!

I went over to her and looked at the song on her Spotify and said “ Oh is it like a Reggaeton type song? I don’t have this song, but I can play some Raggaeton for you, come back at 9pm when I’m on”

Lady: Oh that would be great, thank you!

Other DJ then said ‘ Oh I don’t even have any Reggaeton.’ Well, maybe you should get some…

It’s not always about yourself. There was an opportunity there to make someone happy, even if you don’t have the song they want, that can lead you into something else they may like.

If someone requests something, there’s no need to dismiss it completely. There’s an opportunity in there. Also, you’re in a public space and you’re there to entertain, not just play for yourself.
